    Modern Foreign Languages Faculty

    The Modern Foreign Languages Faculty (MFL) consists of French, German, Spanish and Latin. Curriculum information can be found below.


    Course Description

       The courses develop the skills and understanding to communicate in the target language; teach language and language-learning skills and provide opportunities to develop cultural awareness.   Students learn through communicating in pairs and groups and with their teacher.  They use a range of resources, including ICT, for accessing and communicating information. They develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in a variety of contexts, including everyday activities, personal and social life and the world around us. As well as the learning which takes place in the classroom students will have the opportunity to visit the country of their chosen language at some point throughout their Key Stage 3 & 4 course.

    What is Studied?

    The course aims to develop students’ ability to    understand and communicate effectively in the foreign language and to encourage the development of their language learning skills.

    We strongly believe in languages as a skill for life and something students should enjoy and find rewarding.

    The course is topic based in the four skill areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

    How will the Course be Structured?

    The new course covers three distinct themes.

    These themes apply to all four question papers. Students are expected to understand and provide information and opinions about these themes relating to their own experiences and those of other people, including people in countries/communities where the language is spoken.

    • Theme 1- Identity and culture
    • Theme 2- Local, national, international and global areas of interest
    • Theme 3- Current and future study and employment

    How will Students be Assessed?

    100% Examination in the summer at the end of the 2 year course (All 4 skills – 25% each)

    There are two tiers of entry: Foundation Tier and Higher Tier

    Listening & Reading: Understanding and responding to different types of spoken and written language

    Speaking & Writing: Communicating and interacting effectively in speech and writing for a variety of purposes

    Students will continue to be assessed every half term in all 4 skills. Students will also have a GCSE mock exam at the end of the Autumn term in Year 11.



    Course Level: National Curriculum Key Stage Three

    Course Description

    The course offers a unique opportunity to develop linguistic skills which are highly beneficial to the learning of other languages as well as to mastering English grammar and complex vocabulary. The course develops the skills and understanding of the Latin language through listening, reading and comprehension activities. Students will learn to read and translate from Latin into English and will also attempt short sentences from English into Latin.

    The course also provides an opportunity to discover aspects of Roman life and history as a context for the language taught, and to explore the links between this ancient civilization and our modern world. In addition to day trips to local archaeological sites and museums, a trip to Rome and the Bay of Naples is organised every two years for students to see what remains of the heart of the Roman empire with their own eyes.

    Students learn through working individually, in pairs and in groups. A range of resources are available, including ICT and e-learning. The subject encourages both analytic reasoning and creativity, and students enjoy discovering links with a variety of subjects right across the curriculum.

    • Reading and understanding short stories
    • Grammar and syntax of simple and complex sentences
    • Translation of stories from Latin, and of sentences into English
    •  Looking at derivatives in English and other modern languages
    •  Daily life in Pompeii
    •  Roman society and public entertainment
    •  Pompeii and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius
    •  Life in Roman Britain
    •  The Roman invasion of Britain and Boudica’s revolt
    •  The Roman Empire
    •  Roman religion, beliefs and superstitions
    •  Travel and communication in the Roman Empire
    •  The Roman army

    The main course book used is the Cambridge Latin Course, as well as the CLC e-learning resources and website



    What is Studied?

    • Latin Language - you will learn to read Latin texts in their original language
    • Latin Literature - you will read set texts by authors such as Virgil, Ovid, Pliny, Tacitus and Horace – a chance to read the works of some of the greatest writers of world literature in the original language.

    What Skills are Developed?

    • A sensitive and analytical approach to language generally, including an awareness of the relationship between Latin and the languages of today
    • Appreciation of different cultures and the relationship between ancient and modern cultures and societies
    • How to read texts in Latin
    • An appreciation of Latin literature in its cultural context and in its original language
    • How to communicate clearly and effectively.

    How will the Course be Structured?

    Year 10

    • Language (50%) using Myth, History and domestic life
    • Literature in Prose (25%) and in Verse (25%).

    The Sources for Latin Paper (25%), instead of Prose Literature, is currently not offered.

    Nota Bene

    This is an accelerated GCSE course.  For this reason, student progress in Latin is regularly monitored.  Attendance, punctuality of work and consistent learning are necessary for students to be entered for the exam at the end of Year 10.

    How will Students be Assessed?

    • Language 1 - a story from mythology or Roman domestic life; answer comprehension questions and translate from Latin into English
    • Language 2 - a story from history - answer comprehension questions and translate from Latin into English
    • Prose Literature - comprehension and literary appreciation questions on the prose texts studied in class
    • Verse Literature - comprehension and literary appreciation questions on the verse texts studied in class.
    • Sources for Latin (supplementary work) - answer short questions based on stimulus passages or illustrations and write an exteded response based on sources as evidence for life in Roman society
